Two quotes for the same house can differ enormously in what they actually include. These questions bring those differences into the open before you commit.
The questions
Ask every company the same list and write down the answers. Comparison becomes much easier when you're comparing like with like.
- Is this a full-frame replacement or an insert into the existing frame, and why?
- Who physically does the installation — employees or subcontractors?
- What happens if rot or damage is found once the old unit is out?
- What exactly does the warranty cover, and is labour included?
- Is the warranty transferable if I sell the home?
- Who handles permits and any inspections?
- How will the interior and exterior trim be finished?
- What is the payment schedule, and what deposit is required?
- How long will the work take, and how many openings per day?
- What is the process if I'm unhappy with something after completion?
What good answers sound like
Specific, unhesitant and consistent with the written quote. Vague answers about subcontractors, or a refusal to commit to a written scope, tend to become disputes later.
