Before pricing panels it is worth knowing whether your roof is a good host. Four things decide most of it.
Orientation and pitch
In the continental US, south-facing planes produce the most. East and west still work with a modest production penalty; true north rarely pencils out. Pitch between roughly 15 and 40 degrees is typical.
Shade
Trees, chimneys and neighboring rooflines cost more production than most homeowners expect, especially in winter when the sun sits low. A proper proposal includes a shade study, not just a satellite screenshot.
Roof age and condition
Panels last decades. If the roof has under about ten years left, replacing it first avoids paying to remove and reinstall the array later. Many homeowners bundle the two jobs.
Space and the panel
Usable area after setbacks and vents decides system size, and your utility may cap how much you can install relative to past usage. Bring twelve months of electric bills to the conversation.
